5.8 Closing Stranded Files
Software and hardware errors can sometimes result in the stranding of records and files accessed via AcuServer. AcuServer is equipped to detect and close files opened by Windows clients using AcuServer's dead connection detection mechanism (see section 8.1, "Machine Failures"). AcuServer also detects and closes files belonging to client applications that terminate abnormally with a Control-C or "kill" signal. Other application or system failures may result in stranded records and files. For example, if a UNIX client suddenly crashes, all files opened by that client remain open and all records locked by that client remain locked. If the client opened a file in a mode that prevents other applications from accessing the file (e.g. EXCLUSIVE), that file remains unavailable to other applications.
